This is an original pleinair painting I did of an uprooted tree at Parc La Fontaine in Montreal. In early April 2023, there was a deadly ice storm here in Quebec. Many trees lost branches and some toppled over completely, torn out roots and all due to the weight of the ice. This particular tree was massive, and lay on the east side of the South Pond. Normally the tree would have stood at the top of an incline, and so when it fell, it fell facing down this hill. I chose to paint just a portion of it, focusing on the textures and the light and shadow giving it form. I took some liberty with the blue of the sky bouncing around the tree trunk.. There is no reference to its scale. I created this painting (as well as a small study in one of my sketchbooks) during a pleinair meeting with some members of the Urban Sketchers of Montreal group. This painting is for someone who loves trees, and appreciates the power of nature, in commemoration of the death of this giant. Ideal artwork for any living or working space.

Watercolour, 5 x 7”, painted with professional light-fast pigments on 100% cotton Arches cold pressed paper. The painting is signed by me, JC Little, on the front, and has the title and the date on the back. I will include a certificate of authenticity with this painting. It will be packaged with an archival sleeve, a stiff cardboard backing and a bubble wrap envelope to protect it. To avoid waste, where ever possible I will re-use mailers and other packaging materials. It’s recommended to frame it behind glass, with an acid-free matte, to preserve the painting from deterioration. Display away from direct sunlight.
