NEWS: The Inheritance has won the 2nd Award of Distinction – Contemporary at the Society of Canadian Artists Elected Members Exhibition 2025. The SCA’s most prestigious event of the year, the Exhibition took place from Oct. 29th - Nov. 8th 2025 at Dignam Gallery, 23 Prince Arthur Avenue, Toronto.

The Inheritance foretells the failed legacy of humanity, its crowning glory ablaze in a wildfire atop the head of a child. The little girl is innocent, but like all children of the future, she has no choice in the burden of this bequest. It’s not all bleak, for there are seeds of hope: tiny pinecones gilded in 24k gold, to set this terrible tiara, because hope is pure.

The Inheritance is a pure watercolour painting—all whites are the white of the clay panel, there is no white paint. Granulating pigments in the background shimmer and vibrate freely while the subject is rendered with care. 24k gold leaf has been applied to the tiny pine cones at the base of the tiara. The process of creating this painting is documented on my Instagram. This artwork is for someone who loves and appreciates thought-provoking imagery in the style of magical realism. I’m grateful to my muse for this painting, Finn Little aged nine.

Watercolour, 16 × 20”, painted with professional light-fast pigments, on Ampersand Aquabord (clay panel). The front of this artwork is protected with Krylon UV-Resistant varnish, Golden Isolation Coat, and Krylon UV Archival gloss varnish. It has a 1” deep cradled panel which has been stained in deep brown walnut colour and waxed, ready to hang. The painting is signed by me, JC Little, on the front and has the title and date on the back. I will include a certificate of authenticity with this painting. Because of its varnished surface, it must be specially packaged for shipping and therefore a shipping and handling surcharge is added. As with all artwork, to preserve the painting from deterioration, display away from direct sunlight and humidity.
