Spectrum 14 x 20" watercolour (framed)

CA$3,000.00

“Spectum” is an original painting of a child swinging playfully along a spectrum of umbrellas, high above the clouds. My background in animation sometimes surfaces in my paintings, and this piece showcases that experience. The umbrellas are a metaphor for freedom - it is a flight of fancy, and yet, culturally significant. When we are all free to be who we are, humanity will surely soar; we need to lift one another up to achieve real freedom. The clouds are painted with a recipe of super-granulating pigments, including Moonglow and genuine Amethyst, which shimmers faintly. The umbrellas, in contrast, are depicted in transparent colours, in the order of a spectrum, hence the title. This alludes to both a rainbow, and the infinite colours that exist along the spectrum, with all the associations we ascribe to both. A child in a yellow raincoat swings freely from umbrella to umbrella and without fear of falling, as if along the monkey bars at a playground; they are innocent to the harms of the world. The whimsy is carried by the expressive treatment, pigments given permission to run and spread, mixing with one another, within the boundaries that I set. It’s controlled chaos, warm and cool colours give the painting a sense of movement, the clouds come to life. This is a pure watercolour painting: all whites are the whites of the paper, no white paint was used. I used quite a few advanced watercolour techniques to create this piece including glazing, lifting, masking, negative painting, misting, wet-in-wet and dry-in-wet. The cloud reference photo I used is credited to Johnson Goh (Koon Boh Goh). This painting is for someone who loves and appreciates imagery with an uplifting and hopeful message. Ideal artwork for any living or working space.

Watercolour, 14 x 20” (36 x 51 cm) painted with professional light-fast (I and II) pigments on 100% cotton paper. The painting is signed by me, JC Little, on the front and has the title and date on the back. I will include a certificate of authenticity with this painting. It will be packaged with an archival sleeve, with stiff cardboard backing on both sides, and bubble wrap to protect it, inside a box. To avoid waste, where ever possible I will re-use mailers and other packaging materials. It’s recommended to frame it behind glass, with an acid-free matte, to preserve the painting from deterioration. Display away from direct sunlight.
