Big BIG Trees 17.825 x 12" watercolour

CA$2,000.00

This is an original studio painting, the fifth in a series of larger pieces in soft, muted tones, inspired by some of my “spring melt” pleinair sketches. This is a view of the edge of Montreal’s Parc La Fontaine, from the basin of the North Pond. From here one can see the distinct silhouette of the buildings of Plateau Mont-Royal along Rue Rachel, and a suggestion of the back of the Dollard des Ormeaux monument. There are layers and layers of spidery tree branches, all reaching for the sun in the early spring air. The mix of indigo, cobalt blue and raw sienna provide the base cool and warm tones that I feel in the landscape soon after the snow has melted, while walking my dog Chuck. We can see the original old style streetlamp, which provides the story of the scale of the old trees; without it, we would not know how big these trees are. They are huge! It was a bright day in early April when I did the pleinair sketch I used for reference. This is a pure watercolour painting: all whites are the whites of the paper, no white paint was used. I used quite a few advanced watercolour techniques to create this piece including glazing, lifting, masking, negative painting and wet-in-wet. This painting is for someone who loves Montreal and Quebec, and a calm and peaceful mood. Ideal artwork for any living or working space.

Watercolour, 17.825 x 12", (painted area is approximately 17.125 x 11.25) with professional light-fast pigments on 100% cotton paper. The painting is signed by me, JC Little, on the front and has the title and date on the back. I will include a certificate of authenticity with this painting. It will be packaged with an archival sleeve, with stiff cardboard backing on both sides, and bubble wrap to protect it, inside a box. To avoid waste, where ever possible I re-use mailers and other packaging materials. It’s recommended to frame it behind glass, with an acid-free matte, to preserve the painting from deterioration. Display away from direct sunlight.
